Both organic particles like bacteria, algae, protozoa, natural organic matter and inorganic particles like clay and silt are removed by the coagulation or flocculation methods.

Therefore, inorganic coagulants like the alum (aluminum sulfate) or iron (III) salts like iron (III) chloride are used in the water treatment. Adding these chemicals to the water causes simultaneous chemical and physical reactions in the impurities suspended in the water. Precipitates begin to form, which are removed by the process of sedimentation and filtration. For filtration purpose, rapid sand filters are generally used as these are the most effective. Water is made to move vertically through the sand layers, which is also often incorporated with a layer of anthracite coal or activated charcoal with the sand. These combination methods are extensively used in water treatment for government buildings.
