In regions where the drinking water is dependent on surface water, the water is stored in a reservoir for several days so that the clarity of the water is enhanced by allowing more of the natural oxygen to dissolve in the water and the suspended materials to settle down as deposits. This water is then pumped to a water purification plant where the necessary chemicals are added to water to purify it. While conducting the water treatment for schools one has to take into attention the fact that the water should be ultimately purified to provide only the safest drinking water to schools. There are usually government purification standards that should necessarily be followed in order to ensure that the water is safe to drink in all respects.

As a final precaution, the water is passed through sand filters and activated charcoal to remove all suspended impurities in water. The water is also added with coagulants and flocculants so that the last traces of suspended impurities in water are removed. Common coagulants and flocculants used in water treatment for schools include the common alum or aluminum sulfate and Iron (III) salts.
